Students need to make connections in mathematics concepts and skills. If taught through a product belief of conceptual learning, students can make new connections, apply their learning in new context.
Relational learning is what current math standards are expecting of our students, and ultimately makes our students college and career ready.
• Recognize instrumental/procedural teaching practices and how they may help or hinder student understanding.
• Move from being an instrumental educator towards teaching for relational learning.
